Dawn Breaker

Dawn Breaker

You are a wanderer in pitch black, and unnamable hordes are closing in. Your only weapon is light. Throw flash-bangs with [Z], drop flash-mines at your feet with [X]. Every blast burns the creatures away and — more importantly — pulls the dawn one step closer. The sunrise meter climbs with each explosion, and when it fills, the sky tears open: you survived, the game is beaten. Stall too long and the dark finishes you before the light does.

At first it is easy: sparse enemies, generous charges. But each wave is denser, the creatures get tougher, and your bangs and mines run out and only slowly regenerate. Between blasts you have to run, ration your charges and pick your moment — one well-aimed bang into a crowd pays off far better than panicked fire into empty air. Mine a narrow gap and it turns into a grinder. The pace builds, the dawn is close, and the last seconds before first light are the hottest of all.

This is Dawn Breaker (MIT) by Roger Qi from the 2019 js13k contest — an atmosphere-first game where all the dread and all the hope fit inside the contrast of a black screen and one blinding flash. We ported it to igrasu.ru in full: the epigraph, hints, HUD and upgrade messages are translated, and the canvas text speaks your language too. On a phone the big BANG and MINE buttons do the fighting; the toolbar holds language, sound and fullscreen. Turn on the demo and watch the autopilot tear the dawn out of the dark.
