Five letters reset. Which one is the odd one out?

Tiles click into the slots: five letters in a row. A pause. Wrong answer — and the whole row scatters back. I stare at the shuffled letters, clueless where I went wrong.

Clue one: everything fit except the meaning

The game Anagram hands you a set of letters and five words to solve. You tap tiles in order, the word builds up in the slots on top, and once the letters run out the check fires by itself. My word used every letter. Every single one. So I read the letters right and the order wrong. The correct word sat inside all along, and I walked past it.

Clue two: the first letter lies

I laid the tiles out again and stared at the first one. Almost every false trail starts there: the brain grabs the brightest letter and builds the word around it. I forced my eyes off it and read the set from the end. There, in the tail, hid an ending — familiar, common. Build from it: tail first, head after. I rearranged the tiles — click, slots filled, the check holds its breath a second… correct. Next word.

The third word and the button I hated to press

The third word fought hardest: I tried four options, the letters scattering down each time. My finger hovered over Skip, but it stung — that button reveals the answer, which makes the win not mine. I put the game down for ten minutes, poured some water, came back — and read the set with fresh eyes. The answer sat on the surface: I kept forcing into first place a letter that belonged in the middle. Click — correct.

The reveal

I solved the remaining words with the same trick: hunt the ending, not the start. One word still refused — the letters reset twice, and I hit Skip. The game showed the answer. I laughed: I had held that answer in my head from the start but dropped it as "too obvious". Five words closed, case solved.
