SuperTuxKart — an open-source kart racer in your browser
SuperTuxKart is a free, open-source kart racing game, the successor to the classic TuxKart. And now it runs directly in your browser thanks to an experimental WebAssembly port.
What is SuperTuxKart?
SuperTuxKart (STK) is a 3D kart racing game where instead of cars, you race characters from the open-source universe: Tux (Linux penguin), Konqi (KDE dragon), Suzanne (Blender monkey), and many more. Pick your character, choose a track, and race to the finish while collecting power-ups and overtaking opponents.
The game is distributed under the GPL license — completely free, open-source, and modifiable.
Gameplay and controls
STK offers several game modes: classic race, time trial, elimination race, and item collection. Power-ups are scattered across tracks — speed boosts, shields, rockets, and other unpleasant surprises for your rivals.

Simple and familiar controls:
| Action | Key |
|---|---|
| Drive | WASD / arrows |
| Brake | Space |
| Look around | Mouse |
How it works
The game is built on the Antarctica Engine (STK team's own development) and ported to the browser via Emscripten to WebAssembly. Unlike simple games, STK requires serious resources:
- ~130 MB initial download on first launch
- ~500 MB of RAM to run
- WebGL for 3D graphics
Data is cached in IndexedDB, so subsequent launches will be faster — only updates will be downloaded.
Why this is interesting
SuperTuxKart on igrasu.ru is more than just a game. It's a demonstration that modern browsers can run full 3D games that required a powerful gaming PC ten years ago. What makes this project special:
- Console-quality gameplay — STK rivals many commercial arcade racers in graphics and gameplay
- Multiplayer support — network play via WebSocket (configurable server)
- Progress saving — your profile is stored in the browser via IndexedDB
- Tracks and characters — dozens of tracks and characters from the open-source world
Port features
This web port was created by ading2210 and is available in the official SuperTuxKart repository. Not all desktop features are available in the browser version yet (some rendering details and networking code), but the core game is fully functional.
Give it a try — racing has never been this free!
